Grab the rope between the tips of your index and middle fingers.

Pull the rope up and place your thumb against the spine of the carabiner while your fingers push the rope through the gate.

The bottom line on clipping: practice these techniques and by all means modify them and make them your own. After a few months of lead climbing the process of clipping the rope into quickdraws will become almost subconscious.

PROPER ROPE PLACEMENT THROUGH A CARABINER

One subtle but important nuance of clipping the lead rope into a quickdraw is that the sharp end of the rope (the end tied to your harness) should exit the outer side of the carabiner. If the lead end of the rope exits on the biner’s wall side, the rope may pull across the gate as you climb past the bolt. Though extremely rare, the rope could unclip itself as you climb above—or, in the worst case, unclip as you fall past the anchor bolt. Don’t take chances—learn to clip it right every time!
